Tangerine's Top 5
***Every month we are going to do a "Tangerine's Top 5" post where we pick a category and each write a top 5 list. We thought we would start off with movies as our category this month, but if you have any suggestions for a future "Tangerine's Top 5" category, let us know!
I would like to start off by saying that I am aware that the movies on my list are not necessarily "good" movies by critical standards. They're not award winners and they're not deep. But I could watch them all hundreds of times and enjoy them every time, without exception. Do not judge me. :-)
Number 5 - Scent of a Woman
Okay, I gave that whole big intro about how I wasn't picking good movies and then I actually started with one that is good, by any standards. I have loved this movie for a long time and I believe the version I own is still in VHS format. It's in a category of movies that can make me cry every time...Steel Magnolias, Beaches, Meet Joe Black (this one in particular leads to uncontrollable heaving, highly unattractive sobs)...and yet it's not sad in the end the way those movies are. The acting is amazing and Al Pocino's big dramatic speech gives me chills. It's inspiring and it's only my number 5 because it's so long that I don't actually watch it as much as I would otherwise.
Number 4 - Tommy Boy & Number 3 - Planes, Trains & Automobiles
There we go, now we're getting into the really quality stuff. I'm putting these two together because even though they're two movies (obviously), I like them for the same reason. I am a sucker for the straight man, funny man routine. The scene where David Spade first picks Chris Farley up at the airport make me laugh out loud every time I watch it. I'm smiling right now thinking about it. And the first time I rented planes trains and automobiles I watched the scene where Steve Martin rents the car probably 20 times.
Number 2 - When Harry Met Sally
Can men and women be friends? This movie is funny and cute but it's ALSO intellectual. I have had MANY a discussion with people about this topic. I find that everyone has an opinion. Mine is no...they cannot be friends. Not only that, I would say that in the great majority of cases where men and women are, eh hm, "friends," they're actually not really friends at all ... but one of the people wants something more (attention or attraction) from the other person. That's my theory and I'm stickin' to it.
Number 1 - While you Were Sleeping
They say that actresses will have an easier time getting leading lady parts in romantic comedies if they are cute rather than hot and seem nice, like someone other women might want to hang out with. Like Meg Ryan, Sandra Bullock is all over this and While you Were Sleeping is one of her best. When I first saw this movie I didn't care for it nearly as much as I did once I graduated from college and watched it again. I guess after college was more of a transitional period and I related to her character trying to fit in. Riiiight...but in the end I like it for the same reason that any other person likes romantic comedies...cause it's happy AND funny and everything works out in the end.
Lauri's Top 5

Number 5 - Pride and Prejudice
I saw this movie in the theater with my parents because I’m cool like that. It was at a time where I was really cynical about love and relationships and all that fun stuff, and this movie was the beginning of a restoration of all of that for me. Just that scene at the end where Lizzie looks up and sees Mr. Darcy walking towards her in the field, UGH! It gives me chills just typing about it.
Classic classic movie. I’m going to have to go with Part I as my favorite. While I do love Part II, that scene at the end of Part I (I won’t give it away in case you haven’t seen it) with the door slowly shutting in front of Kay’s face is fantastic. You know what I’m talking about. Just the movie as a whole is so well done, and the acting is really awesome. Oh and Part III is atrocious in my book, but you just have to watch it with the trilogy.
In the words of my sister “It completely feels like the 80’s without all the annoying 80’s clichés”. This movie rocks. Go see it. Any movie that successfully integrates Tears for Fears into the soundtrack gets a big thumbs up from me. I always end up trying to read A Brief History of Time after I see this, and get to about page 9 before I give up. It’s one of those movies that kind of haunts you a bit for a few days after you’ve seen it. I like it.
I grew up with these movies. We had this really crappy copy of Return of the Jedi that we had taped off of TV that I watched so many times that the audio and tracking were always a little off. In fact, I watched it SO many times that now when I watch our fancy DVD copy, I find myself missing the Energizer bunny and ReMax commercials. But really, it’s an awesome trilogy. I definitely can’t pick a favorite. I’m always amazed when friends of mine say that they still haven’t seen it. Listen to me people, take a rainy weekend and go rent all six in the series. I promise you won’t be disappointed…and if you are, well then we can’t be friends anymore. I kid!
Number 1 - The Neverending Story
My all time favorite movie. I LOVED this movie when I was little. I wanted Falcor to be real. I wanted to go with Atreyu on his quest to stop The Nothing from destroying Fantasia. I wanted to face the sphinx and test if I felt my own worth while on my way to the Southern Oracle. Dude, that Swamps of Sadness scene where G’mork almost gets Atreyu freaks me out every time. Oh and in case you were wondering (because I was for a very long time), the name that Bastian calls out at the end for the Childlike Empress is Moonchild. I know, it totally doesn’t sound like Moonchild, but it is. I checked.

I feel that I am the only one leaves comments. In this case it was necessary. I cannot believe that Katie didn't list Dirty Dancing as one of her Top 5 movies. In college you'd watch it over and over and over in one night! I went to bed and you were watching, woke up and you were still watching. How can it not be on here?
